The Perplexity factor: why source-cited AI search matters more in 2027

ChatGPT has the users. Google AI Overviews has the placement. But the AI search platform UK consultants should be paying more attention to than they currently are is Perplexity — because of how its answers are structured.

Why Perplexity is different

Perplexity’s answers are source-cited by design. Every paragraph names the URLs it drew from. The user sees the source list directly. The behavioural pattern this creates is different from ChatGPT — users who use Perplexity are users who actively click through to source links. It’s the AI search platform with the highest referral rate to cited content.

For premium considered-purchase research — the kind of buyer choosing between three firms for a six-figure engagement — Perplexity is increasingly the second tab open. They ask ChatGPT for an opinion, then they ask Perplexity for sourced verification.

What gets cited

Specific, factual, sourced content with clear claims. Perplexity favours pages that look authoritative in the academic sense — named experts, explicit dates, internal references to other authoritative sources. Marketing-tone content gets passed over for primary-source content nearly every time.

What’s changing in 2027

Two things. First, Perplexity is rolling out per-user pinned-source preferences, meaning users can teach the system which sources to weight more heavily. Firms that appear consistently for a buyer’s queries earn that pin. Second, the answer length is increasing, which means more cited slots per query — better odds for firms not at position one.

If you want to know how your firm currently appears in Perplexity, that’s thirty minutes of testing across the prompts your buyers actually use. Intro call is here.
