Web design for solicitors and UK law firms, built for search.

Website design for solicitors and law firms is a search problem before it is a visual one. I build and rebuild solicitor websites with the structure, speed and schema that decide whether a UK law firm website ranks — engineered in from the first wireframe, not bolted on afterwards. Most legal websites are designed to look right and ship SEO-broken. I build them the other way round.

The problem

Why most solicitors’ websites underperform.

A law firm website is usually chosen for how it looks in the pitch, not for how it performs in search. The result is a site that photographs well and ranks badly — slow themes, weak structure, missing schema, and content architecture that neither Google nor an AI assistant can read cleanly. I have written about the five SEO mistakes I see on UK law firm sites; most of them start at the build.

01

Designed to look right, not to rank

Heavy themes and page builders that fail Core Web Vitals before a single word is written.

02

Structure AI cannot read

No clean entity model, thin practice-area pages, and missing structured data. AI assistants cite what they can parse.

03

Rebuilt every three years from scratch

Each redesign throws away rankings and links because SEO was never part of the brief. It should never happen twice.

What you get

A search-led build includes.

01

Information architecture that ranks

Service, practice-area, location and people pages structured for search intent and internal linking depth — not a generic template.

02

Core Web Vitals by default

Fast, lightweight builds that pass Google’s thresholds on mobile from launch, covered under technical SEO.

03

Schema and structured data built in

Organization, LegalService, Person, FAQ and Review schema deployed as valid JSON-LD, so AI assistants can read the site.

04

Migration without losing rankings

Redirect mapping, URL preservation and indexation control so a rebuild keeps the equity the old site earned.

05

SRA-aware content and design

Compliant with the SRA Code, transparency rules and YMYL expectations for regulated legal content.

06

Ready for AI search from launch

Clean entities and citable structure so the firm can appear in ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Perplexity, not just Google.

How it works

New build or rebuild — done once, properly.

I build and rebuild solicitor websites in WordPress, working directly with you rather than through an account team. That can mean a full new site, or a structural rebuild of the one you have where the design is fine but the foundations are not. Because the same person handles the build and the SEO, nothing is lost in the handover between designer and consultant — the usual point where legal websites go wrong.

Branding, logo design, paid media and social are not part of what I sell. Where visual brand work is needed I will work alongside your designer. What I own is the part that decides whether the site is found: structure, speed, schema, content architecture and search performance.

Design, development, or both

Law firm website development is not the same job as law firm web design.

Design decides what the site looks like. Development decides what it does — how fast it loads, how cleanly it is structured, whether Google and the AI assistants can read it, and whether the thing that renders on a partner’s phone is the thing you signed off. Most solicitors’ websites are commissioned as a design project and quietly fail as a development one.

A search-led build treats those as a single brief. The information architecture is set by how legal buyers actually search, not by the partnership structure. The templates are built so practice area and location pages can scale without cannibalising each other. Schema is written in at build time rather than retrofitted. Core Web Vitals are a requirement of the build, not a remedial project six months later.

This applies whether you are commissioning a new law firm website, a rebuild, or law firm website SEO on a site somebody else developed. Small firms and large ones get the same method — a five-partner practice does not need a different standard of build, it needs a smaller one.

What I do not do is compete with law firm website design companies on visuals alone. If you want a brochure site that looks striking and ranks for nothing, there are agencies who will do that faster and cheaper. This is the search-led version, and it starts from what the site has to earn.

Chambers and the Bar

Chambers websites are a different build to a firm’s.

A solicitors’ site sells one organisation. A chambers site has to work for two audiences at once: instructing solicitors looking for named counsel with the right experience, and public access clients who have never instructed a barrister before and search in ordinary words. They need different routes through the same site, and most chambers sites give them one.

The member profile is the page that wins the work, so it gets built as a page in its own right — practice areas, notable matters, appointments, year of call and clean structured data — rather than a name in a grid that search engines skim past. Public access pages carry the Bar Standards Board’s transparency requirements inside the layout instead of in a PDF at the end of it, and enquiry routes finish where they should, with the clerks.

If a set is commissioning a new site or rebuilding the one it has, the build and the search work are the same brief. SEO for barristers’ chambers sets out how the referral and public access routes are separated, and what that does to the structure.

Wording

Is law firm website design different to solicitor web design?

No. It is the same brief under two vocabularies. Partners and practice managers search for law firm website design. Sole practitioners and high-street firms search for solicitor web design, or website design for solicitors. Chambers search differently again. The words change, the build does not.

What changes is the buyer, and that decides the architecture. A five-partner firm needs a site a practice manager can update without breaking the schema. A national firm with a dozen offices needs location and practice area templates that scale without competing with each other — the most common reason I see a large law firm website rank worse after a redesign than before it. An in-house marketing team needs both, plus a migration that keeps the URLs Google already trusts.

I write to whichever vocabulary the firm uses and build to one standard. If you are comparing quotes from law firm website design companies, the question worth putting to all of them is who owns search performance after launch. On most builds the answer is nobody, which is why the rebuild cycle is three years.

Common questions

Web design for solicitors FAQs.

FAQ 1Do you design solicitors’ websites, or only do SEO?

Both, and deliberately together. I build and rebuild solicitor websites in WordPress with search and AI visibility engineered in from the start. The design and the SEO are handled by the same person, so nothing is lost in the handover.

FAQ 2Will a rebuild lose our current Google rankings?

Not if it is done properly. Every rebuild includes redirect mapping, URL preservation and indexation control so the firm keeps the rankings and links the old site earned. Losing rankings in a redesign is avoidable, and usually a sign SEO was never part of the brief.

FAQ 3Can you rebuild our site without changing the branding?

Yes. Many engagements are structural rebuilds where the visual brand stays and the foundations — speed, structure, schema, content architecture — are fixed underneath it.

FAQ 4Do you offer branding, PPC or social media too?

No. I focus on the build, the structure and the search performance. Where visual branding is needed I work alongside your designer. For paid media or social, an agency will serve you better.

FAQ 5Which platform do you build on?

WordPress, built lightweight to pass Core Web Vitals. It gives solicitors a maintainable, well-supported platform with full control over structure, schema and content — the things that decide search and AI visibility.

FAQ 6Do you build websites for barristers’ chambers?

Yes. A chambers build is a different job to a firm’s: the member profiles carry the search demand, the referral and public access routes need separating, and the Bar Standards Board’s transparency requirements belong in the layout rather than in a PDF. The chambers page sets out the method.

FAQ 7Do you build websites for lawyers as well as solicitors?

Yes. Solicitor, lawyer and law firm describe the same buyer in different words, and I build for all of them — high-street firms, national practices, barristers’ chambers and in-house legal teams. The wording a firm uses for itself shapes the copy on its site. It does not change how the site is built.
