Immigration law SEO after Brexit

UK immigration search behaviour has shifted three times in five years: pre-Brexit, post-Brexit transitions, and post-pandemic visa system changes. Immigration firms running SEO programmes designed for the pre-2020 landscape are competing for queries that no longer reflect buyer behaviour.

How buyer search behaviour has changed

Pre-Brexit, the dominant queries were EU-related: EU settled status, EU spouse visa, EU permanent residence. These queries have collapsed since 2021 as the EU settled status scheme closed to new applicants. Most firms still have content optimised for these terms; the traffic is gone.

The current dominant queries reflect the points-based system and the Skilled Worker visa: Skilled Worker visa solicitor, Tier 2 sponsor licence, Health and Care Worker visa, Global Talent visa, dependent visa. These are the queries with current commercial intent.

A secondary shift: increased asylum and human rights query volume reflecting policy changes and small boats news cycles. This is sensitive territory; many firms do not want this work, but firms that do should structure for it.

The Skilled Worker visa as the dominant commercial market

Skilled Worker visa work has become the largest commercial immigration legal market. Two buyer types: the worker (or worker is family) seeking the visa, and the employer seeking the sponsor licence.

Most immigration firm SEO targets the worker. The employer-side opportunity is materially under-served. “Sponsor licence solicitor”, “Tier 2 sponsor application”, “sponsor licence audit” are commercial B2B queries with substantial search volume and limited content competition.

The Health and Care Worker visa as a specialist market

The Health and Care Worker visa has driven substantial NHS and care sector immigration. The buyer types are different: NHS trusts as employers, care home operators as employers, and the individual workers (often nurses, care workers).

The content opportunity: NHS-specific guidance, care sector-specific compliance content, ethical recruitment content (a regulatory hot button). Firms with content here become the trusted source for a high-demand market.

The Global Talent visa for tech and creative

The Global Talent visa is a smaller market but high-value per case. The buyer is typically a senior tech professional, founder, researcher, or creative. The queries are sophisticated, the buyers do extensive research, and the firms that produce detailed content win.

Specific opportunity: content explaining the endorsement requirement for each route (Tech Nation, Royal Society, Arts Council, etc.), what evidence works, how the process compares to alternative routes.

AI search and immigration

Immigration is a particularly active AI search area because the buyer is often researching in private (sometimes in distress), often unfamiliar with the UK legal system, and seeking authoritative procedural answers. ChatGPT and Perplexity are heavily used.

AI recommendations for immigration tend to favour firms with substantive procedural content, named OISC-regulated authors, and clear specialism statements. The vague “immigration solicitor” positioning underperforms; the specific “Skilled Worker visa specialist” or “sponsor licence audit” positioning wins.

What this means for partners

Immigration SEO requires periodic content refresh as the policy landscape shifts. Firms with content from 2018-2019 are running on stale assumptions. A current immigration SEO programme is mostly about Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, sponsor licence, and dependents, with smaller positions in Global Talent and family migration.

For firms with employer-side immigration practice, the sponsor licence and corporate immigration market is materially under-served by content. The SEO opportunity is wider than most firms realise.
