There is no fixed number. Google’s own SEO starter guide says some changes show within hours and others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging any change. For a law firm the order is predictable even when the dates aren’t: fixes first, rankings next, enquiries last. Judge it on enquiries, monthly.

How long it takes depends on where you start, how crowded your practice areas are, and how much Google already trusts your site. The order of events is easier to see once you know what SEO for law firms involves. Knowing it stops you abandoning good work three months in, or trusting work that only moves the wrong numbers early.
What counts as a result?
Enquiries and new instructions. Rankings are a leading indicator, not the result. The two move on different clocks: rankings and impressions shift first, clicks follow, and enquiries follow those, usually some weeks behind the visibility that produced them. Judging SEO by enquiries in month two is like judging a campaign before the ads have run. For how to read the signals properly, see how to know if SEO is working for your law firm.
In what order do the results arrive?
First: fixes and local visibility
The opening stage is technical fixes, on-page work, Google Business Profile and local listings, and the first practice-area pages. In my experience, for a firm starting from a weak base, the map results and local rankings move before the competitive national terms do. Expect movement in impressions and local positions, not yet a flood of enquiries.
Next: practice-area rankings and the first enquiries
Practice-area pages start ranking for searches with real intent, and internal links pass weight to the pages that convert. This is usually where the first clear lift in enquiries from search shows. It is also the point where a firm that stopped early would have quit just before the payoff.
Then: compounding
Depth and authority build up. Harder, higher-value searches come within reach, and the pages built earlier keep earning without further spend. The cost per enquiry falls as organic search does more of the work you would otherwise rent through ads.
Later: an asset, not a cost
Established authority in a practice area is hard for competitors to displace, and the firm owns its demand rather than renting each click. It’s also why short engagements so often fail: they end before the compounding begins.
What makes it faster or slower?
Four things move the timing. Practice area: conveyancing and personal injury are crowded, so progress is slower; a niche commercial specialism can move faster. Competition and location: a London family firm faces a harder SERP than a regional one. Starting position: an older domain with existing content and links has a head start over a brand-new site. Trust signals: a firm with a strong ReviewSolicitors profile and consistent SRA data starts ahead of one building from scratch.
Does AI search move faster than Google rankings?
It can. Being cited in Google AI Overviews or recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot depends heavily on two things: a clear page that answers the question, and firm details that agree across the SRA register, Google Business Profile, ReviewSolicitors and the legal directories.
On my own site, I rewrote two pages to answer specific questions on 29 October and 1 November 2026. In my next weekly check, on 2 November, Perplexity’s answers to both questions were linking to my site. That is one sample on one engine, not a promise, but it shows this clock can run in days rather than months. More on how the two differ in SEO vs AI search visibility.
What should you tell the partners?
Expect the groundwork to show in impressions and local positions first, enquiries to follow those, and the return that justifies the spend to build for as long as the work continues. If you need instructions this month, that’s a paid-search or referral problem, not an SEO one.
Be wary of anyone who promises page one by a date. Google’s own guidance on hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking.
A SRA-aware AI visibility audit is the fastest way to see where your firm starts on this timeline, and an SEO for solicitors engagement is how the work compounds from there.
